Modern 3D printers are far easier to use than a few years ago, but the right choice still depends on what you want to make. These are the points worth checking before you order.
FDM printers melt plastic filament and suit functional parts, prototypes, tools and larger objects. They are the best starting point for most people. Resin printers cure liquid resin with light and produce very fine detail, which suits miniatures and jewelry masters, but they need gloves, ventilation, washing and curing, and the build volume is usually smaller.
Build volume is the largest object you can print in one piece. Around 220 x 220 x 250 mm covers many hobby projects, while 256 mm or larger beds give more room for helmets, enclosures and multi-part models. Bigger is not always better: larger machines cost more and take longer per print.
Automatic bed leveling removes the most common beginner frustration. Look for a printer that calibrates itself, has a flexible or textured build plate that releases prints easily, and offers a clear touchscreen and app support. Fully assembled or nearly assembled models save time.
Faster printers finish parts in hours instead of a day, but quality depends on motion system and cooling as well as headline speed. PLA and PETG print on almost any machine. For ABS, ASA or nylon, an enclosure and a hotend that reaches higher temperatures help. Multi-color systems let you print several colors, but they use more filament and add cost.
Budget for filament, spare nozzles and build plates. A standard 1 kg spool of PLA typically costs a modest amount and goes a long way. Check that spare parts are available, that the manufacturer has active software updates, and that there is a community or support channel you can use.
Compare the final price including shipping and import taxes, the warranty and return policy, and which accessories are included. Check noise level if the printer will sit in a living space, and keep it on a stable surface with ventilation. Do not leave a running printer unattended for long periods.
